3 Easy Ways to Eliminate Awful Smells from Your Kitchen Sink

cleaning a smelly kitchen sink

Water isn’t the only thing that finds its way down your drains, food, soap scum and hair can collect in your drain which can give off a nasty odor. Luckily there are some natural remedies that will get your kitchen sink smelling fresh while also clearing it from all of the debris that have collected.

Boiling water
Never underestimate the power of boiling water. Boil a kettle or pot on the stove and dump it down the drain. The water might be just enough to clear any nasty smelling gunk out of your drain. Pouring boiling water down your sink once a week will decrease the chances of a clog forming.

Baking soda, vinegar and water
Pour a ½ cup of baking soda down the drain and allow it to set for 30 minutes. Then pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain and let it bubble and mix. Sometimes, if you have a clog or a lot of gunk in your sink, the vinegar won’t go down right away. Be patient and allow it to sit and eventually it’ll go down. Once you’re finished, dump a pot of boiling water down the drain. Not a fan of the vinegar smell? Mix lemon juice in the boiling water and dump it down the drain, this will get your drain smelling lemony fresh.

Baking soda, salt, vinegar and water
Sprinkle a mixture of baking soda and coarse salt down the drain and let it sit. The salt will add an extra boost of scrubbing to your drains for seriously smelly sinks. After you let the mixture set for 30 minutes, pour vinegar down the drain and allow it to set for about an hour. Again, pour a pot of boiling water and the optional lemon juice down the drain.
