rug on hardwood floor

Hardwood floors can get bitterly cold during the winter. You even dread the thought of walking across the room without a pair of cozy socks or your slippers on. Not only do they chill your feet but the coolness of the floor makes your home feel much colder.

Keep your feet and your home nice and warm this winter by following these top tips to keep your hardwood floors warm:

Area rugs
Placing a large area rug in rooms with hardwood floors will make a big difference. They will bring heat not only to the hardwood floors but to the room as well. It will also give you an opportunity to play with the décor of your home and provides some much needed change to help get you through the winter.

Reinforce insulation
If there is a cold draft in your home, hardwood floors will be the first thing to get very cold. Placing heavy curtains in rooms with large windows reduce cold spots and provide some solid insulation to keep your hardwood floors from getting cold. Installing a door sweep on all exterior doors and caulking the cracks around the windows will instantly reduce cold spots and drafts and provide the necessary insulation to keep your hardwood floors warm.

Refinish hardwood floor
Old hardwood flooring is beautiful, but can also have some large gaps and cracks which can allow for cold air to enter your home. If this is the case in your home, consider refinishing your hardwood floor with a coat of polyurethane. You’ll need to clean and sand the floors before painting it with polyurethane.
