Summer Energy Savings Tips and Advice

Gillece Services Green ScreenedDuring the summer, we tend to use more energy in our homes than normal by running the air conditioner and continuing with other everyday practices that use energy and generate heat. We have some tips and advice to help you cut down on energy use and utility costs as a result. An expert Gillece Technician can also help you to achieve a more energy-efficient home this summer.

Air Conditioning

Chances are you’re going to run your air conditioner more often than not, especially as the weather heats up alongside high humidity. Regular AC maintenance is one way to get the most out of your cooling system. This includes a professional HVAC inspection at the beginning of the season and routine maintenance throughout summer, like replacing the air filter as it becomes dirty.

You can also raise the temperature on your thermostat while still maintaining comfort, especially if you use ceiling fans at the same time. While you’re away from home, try raising the temperature even more. A programmable thermostat can help you achieve more energy efficient heating and cooling this way.

Another way to get the most out of your air conditioner is to vacuum air registers to remove dust buildup and also keep furniture or objects away from vents so that airflow isn’t blocked.

Windows

  • If it cools down enough either at night or during the day, open your windows and turn the AC off
  • Keep your windows shut and covered with drapes to keep extra heat out of your home
  • Awnings and other outdoor coverings can help keep your home cooler by providing extra shade

Washing and Showering

  • Wash full loads of laundry and dishes to save energy, preferably at night
  • Wash and/or rinse your clothes in cold water
  • Consider air drying both clothes and dishes
  • Cut your shower time by a few minutes each day and the water savings will add up
  • Make sure to run your exhaust fan in the bathroom to remove heat and humidity

Appliances, Electronics and Lighting

  • Minimize the use of hot appliances like hair tools and the stove or oven, which just add more heat to your home on hot days
  • Turn off lights and appliances that you don’t need or aren’t using
  • Unplug electronics like your phone charger when not in use; even devices that are turned off can use energy while plugged in
  • Consider switching to energy-efficient lighting that runs cooler and reduces energy use. Look for the ENERGY STAR label

Take into consideration these tips for summer energy savings and be on your way to cutting costs while making your home more efficient. You can stay cooled down and comfortable without going overboard on energy use. If you’re looking for more ways to save and to get the most out of your air conditioning system, call Gillece today!
