Well, not actually Tom, but a very good likeness (graphic) of him – plumber, neighbor, employer, and owner of Gillece Services.

Tom Gillece was motivated at an early age by a strong internal drive and determination to achieve personal outstanding results with a sense of urgency. While still in high school, he began working part-time for a local plumber and quickly set his sights on becoming the youngest Master Plumber in Allegheny County. Attending plumbing school at night while still in high school, Tom acquired his journeyman plumbing license at the early age of 19 and then passed the Master Plumber Exam at the age of 20, allowing him to realize his goal of becoming the youngest person to pass the Master Plumber Exam in Allegheny County at that time. Tom started Gillece Plumbing and Heating in 1980 when he was only 20 years old. Realizing that he was in a “people business” and not a “plumbing business”, Tom was determined to run his business focusing on the individual – the individual customer as well as the individual employee.

Summertime Heat and Humidity Chases Us Indoors for Relief… but How Exactly Safe is our Indoor Air?

89 degrees with a high humidity level – not an unusual forecast for a hot, summery day in Pittsburgh….

Naturally, we happily all rush to the outdoors when we can – picnics, swimming, amusement parks, water parks, and of course, grass-cutting and gardening, etc.  But, after a partial day has passed, or even a few hours… we tend to want to, even need to, get back inside for our body temperature to cool down while we catch up on some easy breathing.

Here’s the thing – while the air in our households is one of the most vital elements in our environment, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ranked indoor air pollution (that’s right, pollution) among the top five environmental dangers to the public.  Their studies have indicated that air pollution is often likely to be two to five times higher inside your home than outdoors.  Our homes today are tightly sealed and insulated to conserve energy.  So, while you’re cooling down from fun-in-the-sun, here’s what you might be breathing in without knowledge.

The air that you breathe indoors has been recycled over and over, trapping and circulating unwanted elements. These include allergens and particulates like dust, pollen, mold, and fungi, infectious agents like bacteria and viruses, and toxic compounds like carbon monoxide and pesticides. Indoor pollutants can worsen chronic health conditions, lead to new health risks, and potentially cause grave illness and disease.  As humans, when our bodies build up with too many bad elements commonly found in indoor air, our immune systems simply cannot handle them. Air Conditioning Fun Fact! Ben Franklin’s Chilling Discovery…

Did you know that… “In 1758, Benjamin Franklin and John Hadley (a chemistry professor at Cambridge University) conducted an experiment to explore the principle of evaporation as a means to rapidly cool an object.  They confirmed that evaporation of highly volatile liquids such as alcohol and ether could be used to drive down the temperature of an object past the freezing point of water.  Their experiment was conducted with the bulb of a mercury thermometer as their object and with a bellows used to “quicken” the evaporation; they lowered the temperature of the thermometer bulb down to 7°F while the ambient temperature was 65°F. Franklin noted that soon after they passed the freezing point of water (32°F) a thin film of ice formed on the surface of the thermometer’s bulb and that the ice mass was about a quarter inch thick when they stopped the experiment upon reaching 7°F. Franklin concluded, ‘From this experiment, one may see the possibility of freezing a man to death on a warm summer’s day.’” (Wikipedia)

Chlorine – Friend and Foe

…you may be swimming in it, but you certainly should not be showering in it! 

Fun -in-the-sun usually means swimming, splashing and cooling off in crisp, clear, cold pool water on several summer days. We’re all very aware that chlorine is a much needed disinfectant for this type of activity, where people from all over share a common body of water. And, we’re grateful.  As you know, several of us take great strides to rid our bodies of chlorine after a nice refreshing swim.
